THE "UNHIDDEN" JACK PIERCE

The previous post showed Jack Pierce at work on Boris Karloff before the cameras rolled in a scene for
THE MUMMY (Universal, 1932). However, he was partially obscured by a lighting fixture.

In this picture from the January 1933 issue of MOVIE CLASSIC, we see more of him in a different shot. The caption reads, "the Universal make-up expert at his four-hour task". One wonders if there were more taken during this session . . .

THE HIDDEN JACK PIERCE

This 8x10 movie still shows Jack Pierce (hidden behind the studio light) and Karl Freund attending to some last minute touch ups to Boris Karloff as THE MUMMY (Universal, 1932). Pierce the perfectionist is seen applying eye liner to Karloff while director Freund polishes up Karloff's scarab ring.

A PAGE FROM J.P.'S SCRAPBOOK

Pictured here is a page from Jack Pierce's personal scrapbook. Over the years, it has surfaced a few times for auction, sometimes selling, sometimes not.

Then, blasphemy occurred when single pages removed from the scrapbook were seen for sale. This was both a tragedy and a loss. J.P.'s scrapbook is one of the very few of his personal items that have seen the light of day since his passing in 1968.

DID YOU KNOW?

Contrary to rumors, Jack Pierce is not under Mr. Ed's makeup.
The comedy series MR. ED was Jack's last Hollywood makeup gig. He was on staff for 104 episodes (the entire series ran for 143), from 1961 - 1964. Director Arthur Lubin invited Jack to the Filmways production department because he knew Jack and was fond of him.
