WHAT'S IN A (MUMMY'S) FACE?


A great look at the Karloff as Im-ho-tep makeup in this one-pager from THE NEW MOVIE MAGAZINE (January 1933). The inset shows a photo of Karloff with his wife, Dorothy Stine and Karl Freund, the film's director. Fred Archer was hired as the stills photographer, but these images are credited to "Freulich" (Jack or Roman?). Pierce participated in this photo-op, but he is not shown here.

FRANK TAYLOR REMEMBERS JACK


Journalist and monster fan Frank Taylor wrote this touching tribute in the Los Angeles Times on August 11, 1968 after Jack had passed away on July 19.

JACK PIERCE -- GIVE HIM A HAND!


In 2003, the U.S. Postal Service issued a series of stamps commemorating Hollywood's makeup artists. One of them featured Jack Pierce . . . sort of. On the stamp with Boris Karloff being made up for his iconic role in FRANKENSTEIN, we can see the master's hands applying the makeup

YGOR!


Shown above and below are two shots of the Jack Pierce makeup for Bela Lugosi as Ygor in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (Universal, 1939). Besides Pierce's masterful makeup, Ygor is arguably one of the best roles that Lugosi ever played after Dracula.
